Hans Christian was born on April 2, 1805 in Odense, Denmark, to poor parents. His early years were difficult, and he grew up in a world of poverty and suffering. Nevertheless, he had a vivid fantasy and a desire for knowledge.

Since childhood, Hans showed an interest in theater and literature, as well as the art of telling stories. This was the starting point for his future literary career.
