Alfred was born on February 7, 1870 in Vienna, Austria-Hungary (now Austria). After graduating from high school, he entered the Medical Faculty of the University of Vienna, where he studied medicine.

During his studies, he showed an interest in psychiatry and began working in a clinical environment. This experience was the starting point for his further research and career.
