Anis was born on February 21, 1903 in Neuville-sur-Seine in France to Spanish parents. In 1914, the family moved to the United States, where Anis continued her education and began to show interest in literature.

Anis' first poems were published in literary magazines in the 1920s. She also became active in New York literary circles, where she formed friendships with well-known writers and artists, including Henry Miller and John Ensign.

Anis Ning experienced her first literary success with the publication of diaries. Her diaries, from the 1930s until the end of her life, became an important part of her work. In them, she candidly stated her thoughts, experiences and explored her own personality and sexuality.
