Anne Claire Leklou was born on March 24, 1920 in Varso, New York, USA. Her family immigrated from Russia in the early 20th century, and they founded a new life in America. Ann's childhood was spent in a poor area, but already at an early age she showed an interest in reading and writing.

Anne attended Columbia University in New York City, where she studied chemistry and biology. Her education subsequently became an important factor in creating a scientific atmosphere in her works.
