Charlotte Perkins Gilman - Biography

Gilman is a name that is associated with the struggle for women's equality, literary genius and authorship of one of the most influential feminist works of the 19th century. Her life and work are hugely important to both American literature and the women's rights movement. Let's look at the key moments of her biography and her contribution to world culture.

Charlotte Anna Perkins was born July 3, 1860 in Hartford, Connecticut, in the family of the famous theologian Frederick Bailey Perkins and his wife Mary Fitch Weston. She lost her father in early childhood, an event that had a major impact on her life and beliefs.

In 1884, Charlotte Perkins attended Rhode Cliff College in Massachusetts, where she studied literature and art. She also studied painting and traveled around Europe, an important experience for her future career.

Charlotte Perkins began her literary career by writing poetry, short stories and essays. However, her real breakthrough was the novel "Yellow Wallpaper," published in 1892. Written in diary form, the story follows the psychological degradation of a woman exposed to untreated depression and conditioned by patriarchal society. "Yellow Obina" has become a symbol of the suppression of women and has sparked important discussions in the fields of psychiatry and feminism.

Her feminist prose and essays, such as Women and Economics and The Man-Made World, gave voice to women and called for equality and liberation from social restrictions.

Charlotte Perkins was an active feminist and campaigner for women's rights. She believed that women should have equal rights in education, work and politics. She was a member of the American Association of Women and entered political activities in support of women's suffrage.
