Christopher Eric Hitchen was born on 13 April 1949 in Portsmouth, UK. He grew up in a middle-class English family, where his parents, Eric and Unit Hitchen, instilled in him a love of literature and education. Education played an important role in the life of the young. He attended British private schools and subsequently attended Oxford University. At Oxford, he began to develop his analytical mind and sense of critical thinking, which became his iconic features.
