Christopher Eric Hitchen was born on 13 April 1949 in Portsmouth, UK. He grew up in a middle-class English family, where his parents, Eric and Unit Hitchen, instilled in him a love of literature and education. From childhood, Christopher was an intelligent and charming child whose conversational talent and love of books became apparent.
