His childhood was spent in a working-class family, and he grew up surrounded by books and literary works. Simmons enrolled at the University of Washington in Seattle, where he studied English literature and trained in the art of writing. His education had a strong influence on his literary style and ability to analyze texts. His first steps in his literary career involved teaching and writing poetry and short stories.
Dan Simmons' first novel, "Song of Kali," was published in 1985 and allowed him to attract the attention of critics and readers. However, he achieved real fame with the release of a series of novels about Hiperion, starting with "Fallen Hyperions" ("Hyperion") in 1989. This series is considered one of the greatest in the genre of science fiction and brought Simmons wide fame.
The Hiperion series consists of four novels, where each of them is a story by one of the characters. Simmons created multidimensional worlds, interweaving science fiction, philosophy, religious motives, and literary references. This series was a prime example of intellectual science fiction.
In addition to the Hiperion series, Dan wrote many other novels, including the Ilium and Olympus series, as well as horror works such as The Terror. His influence on the science fiction genre and literature as a whole is hard to overstate, and his works have become classics of contemporary literature.
