David Hume - Biography

Hume is a name that is associated with key points in the development of modern philosophy and ethics. His work has influenced many areas of knowledge, and he is regarded as one of the great Scottish philosophers of the Enlightenment. In this biography, we look at key moments in his life and his contributions to philosophy and science.

David was born on 7 May 1711 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He grew up in a family of poor landowners and was the fourth child in ten. His family belonged to the lower Scottish nobility, and despite limited financial resources, David received an excellent education. He attended the University of Edinburgh, where he studied classical philosophy, Latin and Greek, and mathematics and natural sciences.

Hume began his literary career at a young age, publishing his essays and articles. In 1739 he published his first book, "A Treatise on Human Nature," in which he presented his basic philosophical ideas. This work became key in his career and is considered one of the most influential philosophical works in the history of Western philosophy.

David became one of the main representatives of empiricism and associationism in philosophy. He analyzed the processes of cognition and came to the conclusion that all our knowledge is based on impressions and associations between them. He also developed a theory of morality, arguing that moral values are based on feelings and emotions rather than rational reasoning.

One of the most famous aspects of his philosophy is the problem of induction, which raises the question of the validity of conclusions based on observations and experience. This issue remains relevant and a subject of discussion in philosophy until now.

Hume spent most of his life traveling and communicating with other prominent minds of his time. In 1734 he went to France, where he met with Enlightenment philosophers such as Denis Diderot and Jean-Jacques Rousseau. His communication with them had a profound influence on his philosophical views.
