Deborah Elizabeth was born in 1965 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her family was distinguished by an interest in literature and science, and this inspired the young Deborah to explore many areas of knowledge. From an early age, she showed talent and interest in writing and scientific research.

After graduating from high school, Deborah attended Mount Holyoke, a prestigious women's college in Massachusetts, where she studied literature and history.
