Deborah Elizabeth was born in 1965 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Her family was distinguished by an interest in literature and science, and this inspired the young Deborah to explore many areas of knowledge. From an early age, she showed talent and interest in writing and scientific research.

After graduating from high school, Deborah attended Mount Holyoke, a prestigious women's college in Massachusetts, where she studied literature and history. She then continued her education at the University of Oxford, where she received her MA and PhD. Her dissertation was devoted to the history of science and was recognized as outstanding.

After completing her studies, Deborah Harkness began teaching research in scientific activity and the history of science at universities in the USA and Great Britain. Her work in research into scientific activity during the Renaissance earned her recognition and respect in the academic community.

In addition to her academic activities, Deborah always dreamed of becoming a writer. Her dream came true with the release of the novel "Scarlet Ball" (A Discovery of Witches) in 2011. This work was the first part of the Universe Universe Trilogy (All Souls Trilogy), which tells about witches, vampires and demons in the modern world.
