Dmitry was born on October 9, 1891 in the village of Semenovskoye, which was located in the Tambov province of the Russian Empire. His childhood was spent in the atmosphere of rural life, and this subsequently affected his literary works, in which he described the realities of the Russian village.

At the beginning of his literary career he wrote poems and essays, but he began to enjoy real popularity after the publication of his novel "Chapaev" in 1923. This work tells about the life and exploits of the revolutionary commander Vasily Chapaev and his faithful comrade Pyotr Vasiliev.
