Ed was born in New York, United States, and his early years were not easy. After the death of his mother, he was taken into the care of his brother and sister. His interest in writing manifested itself as early as his teens, and he began writing short stories and poetry. In 1946, he was drafted into the army and served in World War II.

After returning from the army, Ed went to college in New York and received a bachelor's degree in architecture. He worked as an architect and journalist, but always dreamed of becoming a writer.

Under the pseudonym Evan Hunter, Ed McBain began his literary career writing novels and short stories. He was especially known for his series of detective novels about the 87th Precinct of New York, where police officers worked in realistic and tough urban environments. The first novel in the series, The Cop Hater, was published in 1956 and was immediately successful.

Ed was a master of creating murders, mysteries and intrigue. His works were distinguished by outstanding intrigue, agility of dialogue and a sharp sense of urban life.
