Edward R. Murrow - Biography
Edward Rosenberger Murrow, better known as Murrow (April 25, 1908 - April 27, 1965), is considered one of the most influential and innovative journalists of the 20th century. His career, which began in the era of radio and continued in the era of television, is marked not only by professional achievements, but also by an important contribution to freedom of the press and informing society.Edward R. was born in Polk Strip, North Carolina, the son of a farmer. In his youth, he developed an interest in radio and editing a school newspaper, the first steps in his future career. After graduating from the University of North Carolina, he attended Harvard University, where he studied law and international relations.
His education at Harvard, where he was also active in the student radio station, prepared him for a future job in journalism and broadcasting.
Edward R. began his radio career working for the CBS News station. He quickly proved himself to be a talented reporter and analyst. One of his early important achievements was broadcasting during the uprising in Spain and Germany before World War II. He also conducted an interview with Idi Amin when he was still an unknown Ugandan leader.
However, a real breakthrough in his career was his broadcasting during World War II. Murrow was appointed correspondent in London and hosted his broadcasts from the British capital. His reporting on the bombing of London and the environment at the front made him famous across America.
The London Declaration, in which Edward R. described the consequences of the bombing of London and talked about the courage of Londoners, became one of the most important events in the history of broadcasting and made a huge contribution to maintaining American support for Britain in the war.
