Ellie was born on September 30, 1928 in the city of Sighet, which was located in what is now Romania. In 1944, when Ellie was still a teenager, his family and thousands of other Jews were deported to Nazi concentration camps during the Holocaust. He himself survived Auschwitz's inferno, and later Buchenwald concentration camp, where he first met the liberators in April 1945.
The experience experienced in concentration camps changed Ellie forever and influenced his writing talent. His book "The Night" (Elie Wiesel's "Night") became one of the most influential Holocaust literary works and was translated into many languages.
