Erich was born on June 16, 1937, in Brooklyn, New York to Hungarian immigrants. After graduating from high school, Erich entered Harvard University, where he studied classical literature and languages. At Harvard, he distinguished himself as a bright and talented student and was recognized as one of the best graduates of his year.

After receiving his bachelor's degree, he continued his education at Harvard Business School and went on to earn a Ph.D. in classical literature from Harvard University.

After completing his studies, Erich taught literature at various universities, including Yalta and Princeton. He also began writing his own works, including novels and dramas.
