In this biography, we look at the life and ideals of Mahatma Gandhi, his role in the struggle for freedom and peace, and his legacy, which continues to inspire millions of people around the world.
Mahatma Gandhi was born in Porbandar, Gujarat, British India. His parents, Karamchand Uttamchand Gandhi and Putlibai, were members of a well-off family. Since childhood, he was known for his modesty and morality.
After graduating from high school, Gandhi went to England for a law degree, where in 1888 he became a lawyer. At this time, he was still far from his future status as a spiritual leader and freedom fighter.
In 1893, Gandhi went to South Africa, where he began working as a lawyer. There he faced racism and discrimination, which instilled in him a conviction of the need to fight for the rights of all people, regardless of their race or religion.
It was in South Africa that Gandhi took advantage of the principles of nonviolence and disobedience for the first time. He became a leader of the Indian diaspora rights movement in South Africa and campaigned against discriminatory laws. This period was the starting point for his future struggle in India.
