George Pitt-Rivers - Biography

Augustus Pitt-Rivers was born on June 14, 1827 in Wolverhampton, England, into a noble aristocratic family. His childhood was enriched by knowledge of art and history through a family collection of antiques and art. He was educated at Etonian School and the University of Cambridge, where he studied archaeology and classical philology.

He showed his passion for archeology and antiques at a young age. He inherited a rich collection of antiques from his grandfather, and this inspired him to research and collect artifacts for many years.

Pitt-Rivers made many trips to Europe and Asia, where he actively collected archaeological finds and ethnographic exhibits. He traveled to Egypt, Greece, Italy and many other countries, adding to his collection of antiques and artifacts from ancient civilizations.

In 1884, George donated his extensive collection to the Great British Museum. His collection was so large and important that it was decided to create a separate museum for its storage and study. This is how the Museum in Oxford appeared, which to this day is considered one of the world's leading centers of archeology and ethnography.
