Gottfried August was born on January 30, 1748 in Kamenets-Podolsky, which today is located in Ukraine. His family were German colonists and he was part of the German cultural heritage in the Russian Empire. His parents were educated and supported his interest in literature and the arts.

Bürger began his education in Kamieniec Podolski and continued it at the University of Göttingen. There he studied theology, but literature and philosophy became his true vocation. He became active in literary circles and wrote poetry and essays.
