James Matthew was born on 9 May 1860 in Kirkcold, Scotland. He was the third among seven children in the family, and his childhood was far from fabulous. At age 8, he lost his brother David, who was the family's favorite child. This loss left an indelible mark on his soul and influenced many aspects of his future work.
