Addams is a name associated with the struggle for social justice, women's equality, and social reform in the United States. Jane was born September 6, 1860 in Sedwick, Illinois, into a middle-class family. Her parents, Sarah and John Addams, instilled in her the values of social justice and education. In 1889, Jane Addams and her friend Helen Gate Star Stevens established Hull House, the first American center for social assistance and education. Hull House became a hub of activism and learning for immigrants and the poorest in Chicago. Medical care, education, cultural enrichment and legal support services were provided here.

Jane was an active supporter of social reform and the struggle for women's rights. She participated in the voting rights movement for women and was one of the most important figures of this movement.
