Jean-Léon was born on 11 May 1824 in the small French town of La Rochelle. His father was a watchmaker, and the young one spent a lot of time in his father's workshop, where he developed his interest in drawing and studying various crafts. At an early age he showed his artistic talent and passion for the study of history and archaeology.

In 1840, at the age of 16, he moved to Paris to continue his art education. He studied at the Paris Academy of Fine Arts and quickly earned recognition from his teachers and colleagues.

One of the important moments in Jerome's life was his participation in a journey to Italy, where he was absorbed in the study of classical architecture, sculpture and history. This journey greatly influenced his future creativity and style. He also visited many other countries, including Greece and Turkey, giving him a unique perspective on world history and culture.
