John Ray Jr., was born on February 8, 1955 in Jonesboro, Arkansas, the son of housewife Winifred Virginia and concrete worker John Ray Greisham Sr. His childhood was spent in the small town of Southaven, Mississippi, where he witnessed many trials and was passionately interested in justice at an early age.
After graduating from Southern Mississippi University, John entered Mississippi Law School, where he received a bachelor's degree in law. After graduation, he began work as an attorney in the small town of Satola, Mississippi, where he faced a number of legal cases that would become the inspiration for his future novels.
He worked as a lawyer for more than a decade, dealing with civil and criminal cases. This professional activity gave him a deep understanding of the American legal system, which he later successfully used in his books.
John Greisham's debut in literature took place in 1989 with the release of his first novel, A Time to Kill. This book was about a lawyer defending an African-American client accused of killing two white men, and was inspired by the real-life events John observed in Mississippi.
