John Milton - Biography

Milton (1608-1674) is a name that represents the greatness of English literature and literary classicism. This eminent poet, prose writer and playwright left an indelible mark on world literature with his works and contributions to the development of the English language. In this biography, we will examine the life path of Milton and his great literary achievements.

John was born on December 9, 1608 in London, in a middle-class family. His father, also named John Milton, was a musician and secretary. The mother, Sarah Jeffreys, was a homemaker. The young received a quality education, starting with private teachers, then entering the St. Petersburg School and then the University of Cambridge. At Cambridge, he studied classics, Latin and Greek, which had a significant impact on his future work.

After completing his education in Cambridge, he went on a trip to Europe, where he continued his student studies and got acquainted with the culture of various countries. During this period, he traveled to France and Italy, where he especially deepened his knowledge of classical literature and art. These journeys had a significant influence on his literary vision and style.

After returning to England, John began his literary career. His early works included poems and essays in which he expressed his political and religious beliefs. During this time, he also worked as a teacher and teacher, sharing his knowledge with others.

However, the real jewel of his work was the poem "The Lost Paradise," which Milton began to write in 1658 and completed in 1667. The epic work, which consists of twelve books, tells of Lucifer's rebellion and the expulsion of Adam and Eve from Eden. "Paradise Lost" became the most important work of English literature and expressed many philosophical, religious and literary ideas of the time.

Milton was also an active political and religious figure. He advocated religious freedom and freedom of speech, writing many political treatises and essays, including the famous treatise "Areopagitica," in which he made arguments for the value of freedom of the press.
