John was born on December 9, 1608 in London, in a middle-class family. His father, also named John Milton, was a musician and secretary. The mother, Sarah Jeffreys, was a homemaker. At Cambridge, he studied classics, Latin and Greek, which had a significant impact on his future work.

After completing his education in Cambridge, he went on a trip to Europe, where he continued his student studies and got acquainted with the culture of various countries.
