John was born on 12 December 1929 in London, UK. His family life was difficult, and John's early years proved unhappy. He described his childhood as miserable and far from happy. His parents were divorced and he spent most of his childhood in various orphanages.

John's education was not stable enough, but despite this, he developed an interest in literature and drama from an early age. His education included teaching at a number of schools, and he later enrolled at King's Cheekbone, but did not complete his studies there.

Throughout his life, John fought for recognition in literary circles, and his breakthrough came with the publication of the play "Look Back in Anger" in 1956. Considered the beginning of an "angry young man" in British drama, the play was a significant moment in theatre history.
