Joseph Albert was born on May 1, 1923, in Brooklyn, New York. He grew up in a family of Jewish immigrants from Russia and Poland. His parents were merchants and survived the difficult times of the Great Depression. Joseph's childhood and youth influenced his later work and attitude to the world.

In 1942, after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Joseph volunteered to serve in the US Army. He trained as a navigator pilot and served as a second lieutenant in a bomber squadron. Military service became an important experience for him and became the subject of his first novel.

Joseph's most famous and influential work was the novel Catch-22, published in 1961. This novel has become a symbol of the absurdity of military bureaucracy and the meaninglessness of war.
