Joy Harghenty - Biography

Joy Harjo, real name Foster, was born on May 9, 1951 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, USA. She is a well-known American poet, musician, and indigenous rights activist. Harghenty also became the first American Indian woman to be elected to the position of Poet Laureate of the United States.

Joy grew up in Oklahoma surrounded by the culture of her indigenous people, the Muskogee. Her childhood was filled with stories, music and traditions of muskoga, which deeply influenced her creativity and personal development.

After graduating from high school, she entered the University of Tulsa, where she studied theater and creative writing. During her studies, she began to actively write poetry and music, expressing her attitude to Native American topics and the struggle for their rights.

Joy became known as a poet and the author of many poems, short stories and essays. Her work often addresses themes of indigenous peoples, nature, spirituality and identity. She conveys her experiences and views on the world in a witty and sensual way in her writing.

One of Joy Hargenty's more famous poems, "The Woman Who Fell From the Sky," follows the legend of a woman who descended from heaven to create peace. This work became a symbol of her cultural and spiritual connection with the Muskoga people and with indigenous peoples in general.

In addition to his literary activities, Joy is also a musician and performer. She plays saxophone and flute, and her music often combines elements of jazz, rock, and indigenous music. Her musical compositions complement her poems and essays, creating a multifaceted image of her art.
