His first famous article, "The Negro Artist and the Racial Mountain," was published in 1926, in which he urged African-American writers and artists to free themselves from the "racial mountain" and look for their own voice.
His poetry collections such as "The Weary Blues" and "Montage of a Dream Deferred" received critical and audience acclaim. became an important figure in the "Harlem Renaissance" - a period in the history of African American culture when artists, writers and musicians concentrated in Harlem, New York.
