Langston Hughes - Biography
James Mercer Langston Hughes was born on February 1, 1902 in Joplin, Missouri, USA. He became one of the most important and influential literary voices in 20th-century African-American literature and culture. His work was distinguished by deep social activity and a heartfelt study of the African American experience.Langston grew up in a poor family and experienced many difficulties in his youth. He lost his parents at an early age and spent most of his childhood with relatives. His interest in literature and writing manifested itself already in his school years.
After graduating from high school, he went to Columbia University in New York, but his academic career did not work out, and he left the university. However, this did not prevent him from developing his writing talent and active literary activity.
Langston became a key figure in the Haarlem Renaissance literary movement, centered on the Haarlem neighborhood of New York City. His poems, essays, and short stories addressed African-American experience and culture, raising important questions about racism, inequality, and social justice.
His first famous poetry book, "The Weary Blues," was published in 1926 and quickly gained recognition as one of the most important literary works of African American literature. His poems were characterized by rhythm, musicianship and a wealth of emotions.
Langston has written over ten poetry collections, including "Montage of a Dream Deferred" and "The Panther and the Lash." His works, such as "I, Too, Sing America" and "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," became iconic and inspired many African Americans and civil rights activists.
