Leonardo was born on April 15, 1452 in a small town in Tuscany, Italy. He was the illegitimate son of the silver master Pierre and the peasant lady Katerina. His generic name was Leonardo di Ser Piero da Vinci, meaning "Leonardo, Piero's son of Vinci." From an early age, Leonardo developed an interest in the world of art and science.

At the age of 15, Leonardo became a student in the workshop of the famous Florentine artist Andrea del Verrocchio. There he began to study the basics of painting, sculpture and anatomy. This period of study proved crucial in shaping his artistic skills and inquisitiveness.
