Already in early childhood, Line showed an extraordinary literary talent and a penchant for philosophy. He attended Haverford School and was inspired by the work of philosophers and writers such as Friedrich Nietzsche and George Bernard Shaw.
After graduating from Line High School, Wolfe attended Harvard University, where he studied English literature and philosophy. During this period, he also began publishing his first articles and essays in literary magazines.
In 1952 he graduated from Harvard and began working in the editorial office of American Critic magazine. His critical articles were admired by readers and colleagues, and he quickly gained a reputation as a talented literary critic.
