Lyudmila was born on February 21, 1943 in Davlekanov, Kazakhstan, in a family of Soviet intellectuals. Her family was educated and cultural, which from the very beginning led to Lyudmila's interest in literature and art. At a young age, she began to study piano and write poetry.

After graduation, Lyudmila entered the Leningrad Institute of Theater, Music and Cinematography (LGITMIK), where she studied screenwriting and worked on her own dramatic works. In this institution, she found her vocation and began to develop her unique writing style.

The first works of Lyudmila Ulitskaya began to appear in periodicals in the 1960s. She wrote poetry, short stories and plays, but her real breakthrough was the novel "Sisters" (1983). In this book, she talked about the life of the Soviet intelligentsia with a subtle sense of irony and a deep understanding of human nature. "Sisters" quickly won critical acclaim and was Lyudmila Ulitskaya's first step towards world fame.

One of the most famous and important works of Lyudmila Ulitskaya was the novel Medea and Her Children (1996), which was translated into many languages ​ ​ and awarded many literary awards.
