Maria was born on May 12, 1799 in the British city of Loudon, in the county of Derbshire. Her father, William Aning, was a paleontologist and often collected fossils in the Charmouth area where the family lived. Maria was one of twelve children in the family, and her childhood was far from wealth and luxury.
Maria had no formal education, but she had a huge natural talent and a passion for paleontology. Her father taught her to collect fossils and study them, and soon she became a skilled paleontologist.
One of her first and most important discoveries was the complete skeleton of the marine reptile, which she discovered in 1811. This was a significant scientific achievement, as few understood the nature of fossils at the time.
Maria continued to make important discoveries in the field of paleontology. In 1823, she discovered the first complete skeleton of an ichthyosaur, an ancient sea lizard considered one of the most important paleontological discoveries in history. Her work also included finds and the study of fossils of marine reptiles, ammonites and other ancient creatures.
