Mikhail was born on March 2, 1931 in the Volga Territory, in the village of Prikolotnoye, in a family of peasants. His childhood was spent in a small rural settlement where the Gorbachev family lived in poverty. After graduating from high school, he entered Lomonosov Moscow State University, where he began to study law. At this university, he first encountered politics and joined the Communist Party of the Soviet Union.

Mikhail began his political career in 1955, working for the Communist Party. He quickly moved up the party ladder through his ability and devotion to the ideals of communism. In 1970, he became secretary of the Central Committee of the CPSU.
