Vladimir Nabokov was born into an aristocratic family in St. Petersburg, Russian Empire. His father, Dmitrievich Nabokov, was a well-known lawyer and politician, and his mother, Elena Ivanovna Rutskaya, was a hereditary aristocrat. was the eldest of five children in the family.

Vladimir Nabokov grew up in an atmosphere of rich culture and education. Already in early childhood, he showed an interest in literature and language, began to write poetry and short stories. He also trained at home, studying English, French and German.
