After leaving school, Neil entered the University of Sussex, where he studied journalism and art. His studies were an important part of his formation as a writer, and he began publishing his poems and short stories in university publications.

In the early 1980s, he tried himself in the comic book genre, writing several scripts for DC Comics, which was his first significant step in the world of professional creativity.
The turning point in Neil's career was the publication of his novel Through Glass in 1996. This book follows the adventures of a mundane guy, Richard May, in mystical underground London, and it has become a cult work and gained a huge following.
