Paul was born on 28 June 1971 in Pretoria, South Africa. After graduating from high school, he attended the University of Pencylvania, where he studied physics and economics.

While still at university, Paul founded his first company, Zip2. This company developed software for interactive maps and business catalogs. In 1999, when the company was sold to Compaq, Paul received his first millions.

However, the real breakthrough for Paul was PayPal, which he co-founded with Max Levchin and other partners in 1998. PayPal became the first online payment system that really changed the way we pay for goods and services on the Internet. The company was acquired by eBay in 2002 for a multi-million dollar sum, and Paul became a billionaire.

After his success with PayPal, Paul Theroux turned his gaze even further - into space. In 2002, he founded SpaceX (Space Exploration Technologies Corp.), with the aim of reducing the cost of space launches and space exploration.
