Philippa was born on January 9, 1954 in Knighton, Berkshire, UK. Her childhood was spent in a middle-class family and she was the oldest child. Already at an early age, she became interested in history and reading, and she dreamed of becoming a writer.

After leaving school, Philip entered the University of Sussex, where she studied literature and history. She also received a master's degree in history from the University of Edinburgh. Education and historical research became an important foundation for her future career as a historical writer.
