Rex Todhunter was born on December 1, 1886, in Nobleville, Indiana, United States. He grew up in a family where reading and education were valued, and the young Rex quickly became a passionate reader. His parents encouraged his literary interests and allowed him to read a wide range of books.

After leaving school, Rex entered the University of Kent (Kenyon College), where he studied literature and classical sciences. Here he also began his writing career, publishing poetry and short stories in a university newspaper. Rex Stout began his career as a writer by publishing short stories and novels in magazines and newspapers. His first novel, "How Like a God," was published in 1929. However, he began to enjoy real popularity with the appearance of the character Niro Wolf.
