Early in his career, he served in the British Army, and then began to travel and explore the world. His first major adventure began with a trip to India, where he joined the East India Company. Subsequently, he went on a trip to Africa, which brought him real fame and recognition.

Richard Francis Burton's most famous and significant achievement was his journey and exploration of Africa, especially West Africa. In 1857, he went on a daring expedition to explore the Niger River and find the headwaters of this powerful river.

Burton and his associate John Hanning Speke discovered the starting point of the Niger River and reached the city of Shegga, which was the center of West African trade and culture.
