Richard Francis was born on 19 March 1821 in Torquay, UK, the son of a priest. His parents encouraged education and a passion for knowledge, and he received an excellent education at Oxford and learned several languages, including Arabic and Greek.

Early in his career, he served in the British Army, and then began to travel and explore the world. His first major adventure began with a trip to India, where he joined the East India Company. Subsequently, he went on a trip to Africa, which brought him real fame and recognition.

Richard Francis Burton's most famous and significant achievement was his journey and exploration of Africa, especially West Africa. In 1857, he went on a daring expedition to explore the Niger River and find the headwaters of this powerful river.

Burton and his associate John Hanning Speke discovered the starting point of the Niger River and reached the city of Shegga, which was the center of West African trade and culture. Their journey was full of adventure and hardship, including illness, attacks on local tribes and incredible climatic conditions.

During his journey, he was also engaged in cultural research and documented the customs, religion and languages ​ ​ of local residents.
