Robert Lewis Stevenson - Biography

One of Scotland and the world's most famous and valuable writers in the 19th century, Stevenson left an indelible mark on the history of literature. His adventure novels and mystical works are still read with relish, and his literary legacy remains an inspiration to many. Let's delve into Robert Lewis Stevenson's biography, from his early years to his influence on world literature.

Robert Lewis Bruce was born on 13 November 1850 in Edinburgh, Scotland. He was the son of Thomas Stevenson, an engineer and lighthouse builder, and Margaret Isabelle Bruce. From a family where technique and creativity were combined, he inherited an interest in the sea and fantasy.

Since childhood, Robert showed an interest in literature and began to write short stories and poems. His first works were published in family magazines, and this was the beginning of his literary journey. He attended the University of Edinburgh and continued to develop his writing talent.

One of the most important events in the life of Robert Stevenson was his journey through the ocean. In 1876 he went to sea as a traveller and writer. This journey was the basis for his book "Through the Seas," in which he described his impressions of sea adventures.

However, Robert Stevenson's real literary success was the novel Treasure Island, published in 1883. This adventure piece tells about the search for treasures on the island and has become incredibly popular. His next works, such as "The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde," explored the theme of dual personality and the dark sides of human nature.

Robert Stevenson's health was undermined by the disease and he was forced to seek a warm climate outside Scotland. He traveled to various countries, including the United States, Hawaii and Samoa. In recent years, he settled on the island of Samoa and became a member of the local community.
