After graduating from high school, Shel entered the university, but soon dropped out and decided to follow his passion for art. During the Korean War, he was called up for military service, where he continued to draw and write poetry. His army service inspired his first works.
After returning from the army, Shel Silverstein began to work actively as an artist and writer. His illustrations and poems began to be published in various magazines and newspapers. He also began writing songs and working as a cartoonist.
