Sheridan Le Fanu - Biography
Sheridan Le Fanu Biography - The Life and Work of the Famous Author of Irish HorrorJoseph Thomas Sheridan Le Fanu was born on August 28, 1814 in Dublin, Ireland. He was the second son of influential Irish author Thomas Philip Le and his wife Emma Dobbs. The Le family was educated and cultured, and the young Sheridan grew up in a literary atmosphere.
Sheridan Le was educated at the prestigious Grammar School in Dublin and at Trinity College, where he studied Greek, Latin and literature. His interest in literature became apparent from an early age, and he began writing poetry and prose. In 1838 he published his first short story, "The Ghost and the Bonesetter," in "Dublin University Magazine."
In 1838, Sheridan Le married Susan Sherwood and they had four children. He later began working in law and was a well-known lawyer. However, literature always remained his passion, and he continued to write, in parallel with the practice of law.
Sheridan Le Fanu became one of the most important authors of Irish and English horror. His works were distinguished by a deep psychological approach and the creation of a gloomy atmosphere. It is considered a precursor to the Gothic horror genre and made a significant contribution to the formation of the literary style that became popular in the 19th century.
One of Le's most famous works is the novel Carmilla, published in 1872. This novel became one of the first works about vampires and gave rise to an interest in feminist topics in literature. In "Carmila," the author explores the theme of female sexuality and power, making his work unique to its time.
