Thomas was born on 27 October 1728 in Marton-in-Cleveland, a small town in North Yorkshire, England. His childhood was spent in a simple family, and he received a basic education, which included reading, writing and navigation. These skills became the basis for his future career as a navigator.

In 1755, after several years of service on merchant and military ships, he joined the British Navy. This was an important turning point in his life, as he began to participate in many expeditions and sea adventures.

The early years of Thomas Cook's service on the ships of the fleet were saturated with a variety of experiments and adventures. His first important mission was to participate in an expedition to Canada in 1759, where he was involved in coastal mapping and saw combat. His navigational skills and skill with maps made him a valuable crew member.

However, real fame came to Thomas Cook during his work on the ship Endeavor during James Cook's first sea expedition in 1768-1771. This expedition was aimed at studying the Pacific Ocean and the South Ocean.
