Thomas Edward was born on 16 August 1888 in Wales, UK. He was the fourth son of the family, and his childhood passed calmly and imperceptibly. From a young age he took an interest in history, literature and archaeology, a precursor to his future achievements.

Lawrence was educated at Oxford, where he studied history and archaeology. His academic interest in the Arab world and history later played an important role in his life and career.

Before pursuing a military and diplomatic career, he worked as an archaeologist. Lawrence was appointed to the Advaiser role of Sheriff Hussein of Mecca and played a key role in the Arab uprising against the Ottoman Empire.
