Thomas Laurens was born on July 20, 1953 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA. His family was well-off and well-rounded, which allowed young Tom to get a good education and develop his interests. He graduated from high school in Minneapolis and entered the Freeman School, a prestigious private institution in Massachusetts.
After graduating from high school, Thomas attended Yale University, one of the most prestigious universities in the United States. There he studied Middle Eastern and Asian studies and first began to take an interest in international relations and global issues. The desire to understand world processes and politics became his main motivation in further education and career.
After graduation, Thomas Friedman began his journalism career. Initially he worked for various local newspapers, but soon his talent and analytical mindset caught the attention of major publications. In 1981, he joined the editorial staff of The New York Times, one of the most influential and prestigious newspapers in the world.
With the beginning of his work at The New York Times, Thomas began traveling the world and covering world events. His first major overseas assignment involved critical events in Lebanon, where he actively monitored and analyzed the course of hostilities. This experience was the first step towards the formation of his specialization in international journalism.
