After graduating from high school, Upendra entered the National Defense Academy in Indore, which was the beginning of his military career. He went through training with great determination and over the years became a recognized expert in tactics and military art.

Upendra joined the Indian Army and subsequently achieved outstanding success in the military sphere. His courage and leadership qualities made him an outstanding military leader. An important moment in his service was the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971, during which he commanded the 4th Corps of the Indian Army.

During this war, Upendra Bakshi demonstrated outstanding tactical abilities and strategic genius. His command was a key factor in the successful operations of the Indian Army, resulting in the establishment of the Bangladesh Republic and Pakistan conceding defeat.
