In his youth, he studied at Moscow University, where he began to show interest in literature and poetry.

Basil's first poems were written in German, and he was strongly inspired by German romantic literature. However, he soon switched to Russian and began writing poetry in German. His poetic talent was noticed, and he became actively involved in literary circles of the time.
