Wilhelm was born on November 10, 1759 in Marbach, in the Duchy of Württemberg, Germany. His family was modest and not rich, but the young showed his interest in literature and art from an early age. He attended the local school and showed outstanding abilities in the study of literature and languages.

After graduation, he entered Karlsruhe University, where he studied law, but his real attraction was always to literature and philosophy. During his university years, he began writing poetry and dramatic works. His work attracted interest and inspired his fellow students.

One of his most famous works is the tragedy "The Renunciation of Freedom" ("Die Räuber"), which was written by him in his youth and caused a great resonance in his era.
