Green Mile (1999)
The plot takes place in 1935 in a prison suicide block, known as the "Green Mile," in Louisiana. The protagonist, Paul Edgecombe, is the block's boss, whose job it is to oversee convicts awaiting their execution in an electric chair. Although Paul is used to the cruelty and hopelessness of the place, his beliefs and moral principles begin to waver when John Coffey, a giant black man accused of murdering and forcibly raping two girls, arrives in prison. At first, Paul and his colleagues are certain of John's guilt, but as they begin to learn his story and see his unusual gifts as a healer, their confidence begins to crack. It gradually becomes clear that John is not as society and prisoners see him. Not only is he innocent of the crimes he is accused of, he also has the ability to treat people for their illness and suffering.
