The film takes place in France in the first half of the 19th century, when the country was gripped by social inequality, poverty and political upheaval. The main character is Jean Valjean, a former convict who, after 19 years of imprisonment for stealing bread, is released, but continues to live under the shadow of his crime. Jean changes his name to Monsignor Madeleine and tries to start a new life, but his past constantly haunts him, especially Inspector Javert, who does not believe in his re-education and seeks to arrest him.

In her journey, Madeleine meets Fantine, a young mother forced to take care of her daughter Cosette by selling her hair and body. He takes care of the girl after Fantine's death, vows to give her justice and provide Cosette with a better future. However, their lives are under threat due to constant hardship and persecution by Javert, who continues to seek Madeleine.
